Today I decided to just run around Walnut Creek (in NorCal). I started by running about a mile to an office building with a parking garage. I jumped over a little gab and grabbed onto the top of a wall (which i’ve never done before, and was exciting). I then ran through the parking garage area, looking to see what I could do – then falling upon a wall that was bout 12+ feet high (it was more than double me).
Now, I tried out for Ninja Warrior about 6 months ago, and did everything well BUT the ‘Warped Wall’ – it’s a 15ft wall that is shaped like a skating ‘Vert’ ramp. I had never practiced it because i thought it’d be easy. Nope. I failed in three tries.
Back to this 12ft wall. I tried running up it a few times, and couldn’t get it. I tried practicing getting 2 feet up on the wall and jumping away from the wall, and I did great. Just the going ‘up’ portion was really tough. After about 15 tries and getting within 2-3 inches, I got frustrated. I walked away momentarily to practice some precision jumping (from one spot to another specific spot). I looked back at the wall, and noticed something. You can’t run ‘at’ the wall, you have to run ‘up’ it…
If you run at the wall, you’ll fall into the wall and your body will just push you back. So instead of leaning forward, I leaned back. Oh snap! I put a hand onto the top. After a few more tries, I made it up the 12ft wall. I have never done that before, and was mighty excited.
I jumped over some shrubbery, then proceeded to jump over bars and work on some 360 degree spins after jumps. This took about 15 minutes before I was spent and uber-sweaty. I got better at precision jumping with one foot, jumping over an object and landing with both feet in a specific spot, and scaling a high wall. A good day of practice i’d say…
